PCI Pecilastic U protects against deformation damage from new screed
The town hall in Medebach is a showpiece for cost efficiency, budget-compliance and rapid construction progress: The building in the heart of the town was completed in only 18 months; it symbolises the municipal administration's image as modern, accessible service provider. On roughly 1,100 square metres, 30 x 60 cm porcelain stoneware tiles were installed on isolating membranes and with flexible tile adhesive on about four-week old screed for underfloor heating. To permanently ensure the demanding requirement profile, the products of PCI Augsburg GmbH were used to perform the workmanship. For the highly frequented areas in foyer, assembly halls and corridors, the choice fell on unglazed, large-size porcelain stoneware tiles. A pleasant atmosphere is also ensured by an impact sound improvement of approx. 8 dB by insulating the tiling from the floor. The contract for tile installation was awarded to Ralf Schmidt. "Being in business for four years, we are a young company that still has to establish its reputation. For this reason, we obviously did not want to take any chances and therefore decided in favour of the well-known and reliable products of PCI Augsburg", recalls master tiler Ralf Schmidt.
For the overall 800 m² floor space in foyer, council chamber, assembly halls, staircases and corridors, tiles in the size of 30 x 60 cm were used. The two staircases feature corresponding steps and risers. The wall covering consists of 30 x 60 cm stoneware tiles. On the floor, porcelain stoneware tiles in the size of 30 x 60 cm were installed on a total area of 800 m². The four employees of Ralf Schmidt performed the work in three stages: First the walls were covered, then the floors, and finally the staircases. To protect the tiling from subsequent damage caused by deformation of the roughly four-week old cement screed, the waterproofing and isolating membrane PCI Pecilastic U at 1:1 dilution with water was installed after priming the screed with PCI Gisogrund 404. The ready-to-use membrane is simply cut to size and bonded to the substrate. It reliably compensates for expansions/contractions, cracks, irregularities in the substrate and variations in temperature. The latter is of particular importance in combination with underfloor heating. To safely prevent subsequent deformations, the isolating membrane PCI Pecilastic U was installed on the floor with the light flowable adhesive PCI Nanoflott light. For this purpose, the adhesive was applied to the floor, the membrane positioned and firmly pressed down with a wood board. The joints were secured with masking tape. After only twelve hours it was already possible to install the tiles on this combination. PCI Nanoflott light was used here as well. However, the wall tiles in the sanitary facilities were attached with PCI Nanolight. Colour-coordinated joint sealers between the tiles add the perfect finishing touch to the aesthetic effect of the spaces. For the dark-brown floor tile, the choice fell on cement-grey PCI Rapidfug and between the sand-coloured wall tiles, the flexible joint grout PCI Nanofug in Pergamon colour creates a harmonious appearance.
The construction project Town Hall Medebach inspired everyone involved. Hubertus Dohle, the responsible PCI consultant, monitored the entire project and provided helpful detailed information as well as solutions for specific problems.
