Concrete flagstones on a terrace – laid and grouted
The Radke’s single-family home has been erected in summer 2010. It is situated on the outskirts of Korschenbroich, a town in the North-West of Germany, just 10 kilometres from Mönchengladbach. For the construction of his 160 sq m terrace, Mr. Radke opted for concrete flagstones that were grouted with the special joint grout PCI Pavifix 1K Extra. The PCI Pavifix product range consists of various products that constitute a functional unit and are intended for the exterior use when paving with natural or artificial stones. In cooperation with the building merchants involved, Messrs. Brands & Schnitzler of Mönchengladbach, preliminary pilot jointings have been done to make sure there would not appear any spots or stains on the factory-sealed concrete stones. The paving joint grout PCI Pavifix 1K Extra can be applied for floor surfaces in private environment and is used for water-permeable grouting on drainable substructures.
The 160 sq m concrete flagstones made by KANN (40*40*3cm, sealed ex works), were laid on a loose chippings bed by the company Hohen GbR Gartenservice at family Radke’s. Grouted concrete upstands along the boundaries of the flagstones were placed in order to avoid undesirable shifting. The joints were blown-out to get the necessary joint depth and then the surface and the edges of the concrete flagstones were generously pre-wetted. This had to be done carefully to avoid undesirable water remains in the edges. Afterwards, the gardening experts applied the paving joint grout Pavifix 1K Extra using also jets of water to support the action of inserting the grout into the joints by means of hard rubber squeegees. Half an hour after elutriating the joint grout, the concrete stone with its chamfered edges had to be swept in a diagonal pattern across its surface using a slightly wetted coco broom. As a result, the grouting is found only on the joint groove and not on the chamfered surface of the concrete stone. In this way, a smooth, crack-free surface is created.
The workmanship was done by company Hohen GbR Gartenservice with three experts within three and a half hours. PCI Pavifix 1K Extra paving joint grout was easy to apply and the Radke family is very satisfied with the impressive result that has been achieved.
